Blue Jackets Blank Blackhawks 4-0 on Feb. 4, 2026, Extending Streak and Defensive Dominance

A shutout win sends Columbus into the Olympic break with momentum
The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, extending Columbus’ winning streak to seven games and completing a season sweep of Chicago. The result also marked Columbus’ second consecutive shutout, following a 3-0 win at New Jersey two nights earlier.
Goaltender Jet Greaves stopped 21 shots to earn his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his NHL career. At the other end, Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight made 16 saves as the Blackhawks were held scoreless for the full 60 minutes.
How the scoring unfolded
Columbus built an early lead in the first period and controlled the game from there. Defenseman Zach Werenski opened the scoring at 4:46 of the first period on a shot that deflected off Chicago defenseman Louis Crevier. Ivan Provorov added a second goal at 12:50, giving Columbus a 2-0 advantage before the first intermission.
The Blue Jackets continued to add separation as the game progressed. Danton Heinen scored to make it 3-0, and Sean Monahan added another to complete the 4-0 final.
Werenski’s milestone and a defense-led attack
Werenski’s goal carried a notable benchmark: he became the first defenseman to reach 20 goals before an Olympic break. The Blue Jackets’ defense has been a major offensive driver this season, with team defensemen combining for a league-high 44 goals.
Werenski also extended his personal scoring streak to seven games. Over that stretch, he has produced two goals and eight assists, underscoring how consistently Columbus has been generating offense from the back end.
A team-wide defensive run, and what it means in the standings
The shutout was part of a broader defensive stretch for Columbus. With Greaves’ clean sheet following Elvis Merzlikins’ shutout against New Jersey, the Blue Jackets recorded consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2020 and did so on back-to-back nights for the first time since 2019. It was also the first time the franchise posted back-to-back shutouts by different goaltenders.
Columbus entered the Olympic break with a significantly improved position in the Metropolitan Division race. Since Rick Bowness was hired as head coach on Jan. 12, the Blue Jackets have gone 10-1. They were seven points out of a playoff spot at the time of the coaching change and headed into the break two points behind the New York Islanders for third place in the division.
- Final score: Blue Jackets 4, Blackhawks 0
- Shots saved: Greaves 21; Knight 16
- Goal scorers (CBJ): Werenski, Provorov, Heinen, Monahan
- Next games after the break: Columbus at Boston (Feb. 26); Chicago at Nashville (Feb. 26)
With consecutive shutouts and a seven-game winning streak, Columbus closed the pre-break schedule with measurable gains in both defensive results and the standings.
