Bond set after Columbus City Schools student shot outside Martin Luther King library branch, police say

What happened
A judge set bond for a 19-year-old Columbus man accused of shooting a Columbus City Schools student during an encounter outside a Columbus Metropolitan Library branch, following a Thursday evening incident that prompted a brief lockdown and a police investigation.
The shooting was reported shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026, in the parking lot of the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, at 1467 E. Long St. The library is in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville area on the city’s Near East Side, a short distance from East High School.
What investigators allege
Authorities say the encounter began in the parking lot when the suspect pulled in, got out of a vehicle and exchanged words with the student. Investigators allege the suspect then produced a firearm and shot the student once in the abdomen before leaving the area.
The student was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police did not immediately release additional medical updates late Thursday night.
Arrest and charges
Police said the suspect left the scene but later surrendered to officers around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. He was taken into custody and booked on a felonious assault charge, a second-degree felony under Ohio law.
At this stage, the case remains in its early procedural phase. A felonious assault charge can be filed while investigators continue gathering evidence, and additional charges may be considered later depending on investigative findings and prosecutorial review.
Library and school response
Library staff locked down the branch shortly after gunfire was reported. The lockdown was lifted after police arrived and the scene was secured, and the branch closed for the remainder of the night.
Columbus City Schools confirmed the victim is a student and announced increased security near East High School for Thursday night and Friday, Feb. 27. The district also said support staff would be available for students and employees affected by the incident.
