Emergency Alert: Winter Storm Fern

Governor Mike DeWine has declared a State of Emergency for Ohio, including the City of Columbus, effective Sunday, January 25, 2026. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through noon on Monday, January 26. Forecasters anticipate total snow accumulations between 9 and 12 inches, accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and high winds. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has cautioned that a Level 3 Snow Emergency may be declared if conditions worsen, which would close all roadways to non-emergency travel. Residents are strongly urged to stay off the roads and remain indoors to allow city crews to prioritize snow removal and emergency response.

Recreation and Parks Facility Closures

Due to ongoing capital improvement projects and the current severe weather, the following park alerts are active:

  • Nelson Park & Westgate Park: Construction on new playground equipment is currently underway. While current structures may remain standing, residents must avoid fenced-off construction zones.
  • Kilbourne Run Sports Park: The facility remains closed to the public through Spring 2026 for comprehensive site renovations.
  • Priscilla R. Tyson Cultural Arts Center: The center is closed for renovations through April 2026. All indoor programming has been suspended during this period.
  • Mifflin Park: Access is currently limited due to active playground installation and pollinator garden construction.

Public Health and Safety Notices

The Columbus Board of Health recently finalized several community service contracts to enhance local care. A major agreement with Equitas Health has been authorized to provide SafePoint harm reduction services throughout the 2026 calendar year. Additionally, new pharmaceutical distribution services for 340B patients have been established to ensure continued access to affordable medication.

Regarding community safety, the Department of Public Safety and Ohio State University Police have issued a joint awareness notice following an attempted robbery near the Ohio Union. While no injuries were reported, residents are reminded to keep doors and windows locked, walk in groups after dark, and report any suspicious behavior to the Columbus Division of Police.

Administrative Announcements

City leaders have officially launched the Clean and Safe Corridor initiative to improve lighting and safety along major business routes. Furthermore, the city’s new food waste composting program has expanded with three additional drop-off locations now active, aiming to reduce landfill intake by an estimated one million pounds daily.
