Public Sessions Set for City Hall Despite Local Weather Closures

Columbus City Council is scheduled to convene for a heavy legislative session today, Monday, January 26, 2026, with 116 matters appearing on the afternoon agenda. While the Franklin County Municipal Court announced a closure today due to inclement weather, official city government sessions in Room 231 of City Hall are still slated to proceed. The day’s business is split into two primary segments: a general Council Meeting starting at 5:00 p.m., followed immediately by a Zoning Committee session at 6:30 p.m.

Major Financial and Infrastructure Votes

Among the most significant items for the 5:00 p.m. session is Ordinance #0029-2026, which seeks to authorize the expenditure of more than $6.4 million. This funding is designated for lease payments to the RiverSouth Authority, a move intended to support ongoing debt retirement and urban redevelopment efforts. Additionally, Council will consider a series of contracts for essential city services, including a universal term contract for Ford OEM parts with Ricart Properties and an agreement for John Deere mower components to maintain city properties throughout the upcoming spring season.

Infrastructure remains a top priority for today's session. Council is expected to vote on the appropriation of real estate necessary to finalize the South Linden Sidewalks project. This initiative, part of the Urban Infrastructure Recovery Fund, aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the South Linden neighborhood. In a related safety measure, Ordinance #0089-2026 proposes a request to the Ohio Department of Transportation to establish a new, safe speed limit on Parsons Avenue, spanning from East Whittier Street to East Broad Street.

Legislative Focus on Housing Stability

A substantial portion of today’s agenda is dedicated to housing affordability and community development. Council members are scheduled to review several ordinances that would forgive the principal and accrued interest on HOME loans for various housing partnerships. These include the Joyce Avenue Homes, Fairview Homes, and Southside Homes Limited Partnerships. The forgiveness of these loans, totaling millions of dollars, is conditioned on the sale of these units to existing tenants or low-income homebuyers, representing a significant effort by the Department of Development to transition residents into permanent homeownership.

Utility and Health Services

The Department of Public Utilities also has several high-stakes items on the floor, including a $2.2 million modification to a water meter reading services contract and more than $4.4 million for sewer treatment chemicals. Furthermore, the Board of Health is seeking approval for a new contract with Ohio State University Physicians to provide essential clinical services through early 2027. These sessions occur as the city continues its broader evaluation of Mayor Andrew Ginther’s proposed $1.26 billion operating budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
