Layoffs and a halted expansion plan follow the loss of a major state funding stream

A Columbus nonprofit that provides free services to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults is scaling back operations after the nonrenewal of a state grant that had helped underwrite its housing work. Kaleidoscope Youth Center, which serves young people ages 12 to 24, has said the funding loss is forcing staffing reductions and a pause on plans to expand programming.

The immediate operational pressure centers on the organization’s Housing Program, launched in 2019 to assist LGBTQ+ young adults experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The program has served more than 50 people over time and, as of the funding decision, housed 10 residents in four apartments. The nonprofit’s stated goal has been to keep those leases in place through July 2026, when the final lease is scheduled to end, to provide more time for residents to transition.

What funding changed, and why it mattered

The housing effort relied in part on the Ohio Department of Health’s Services for Homeless Youth and Homeless Pregnant Youth Grant, which operates on a two-year cycle. For fiscal years 2024 and 2025, Kaleidoscope received $227,247 total under that grant. The organization has said the grant had been a significant support since 2021 and that the nonrenewal created an immediate budget gap that could not be absorbed without cuts.

State officials said the program faced competition for limited dollars in the 2025–26 cycle, and that Kaleidoscope’s application was not among those awarded funding. The department indicated that the organization can apply again when the next cycle begins on July 1, 2027.

Program impact and near-term options for residents

The housing program’s expected end date has been described as early to mid-November 2025, though the organization has continued to pursue alternative funding to extend current placements. Separately, community fundraising and sponsorship efforts have been organized to provide direct support for affected residents, including help with moving-related expenses and short-term stabilization needs.

Broader context: rising demand and constrained nonprofit budgets

The service reductions come as homelessness and housing instability remain persistent concerns for LGBTQ+ young people. National survey findings cited by multiple homelessness and youth-support organizations have repeatedly shown elevated rates of housing instability among LGBTQ+ youth compared with their peers. Locally, Kaleidoscope has positioned its housing work as a targeted option for young adults who may avoid or struggle to access settings they perceive as non-affirming.

  • Kaleidoscope Youth Center serves LGBTQ+ youth ages 12–24 and provides services at no cost to clients.
  • Its Housing Program began in 2019 and has housed 10 residents at the time of the grant nonrenewal.
  • The organization has said the funding change led to layoffs and a pause in expansion plans while it seeks replacement revenue.

Kaleidoscope has described the housing program’s wind-down as a time-sensitive transition, with the goal of preventing residents from returning to homelessness while new funding is pursued.

The organization has not provided a public timeline for when paused expansion efforts could resume, indicating that future programming and staffing levels will depend on securing stable replacement funding.
