A statewide commemoration begins in the capital

Columbus is set to play a central role in Ohio’s yearlong public observance of Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, anchored by events scheduled around Toni Morrison Day on Feb. 18, 2026. The statewide initiative, titled “Beloved: Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison,” is planned to run from Feb. 18, 2026 through Feb. 18, 2027, beginning with a signature kickoff in Columbus and concluding in Morrison’s hometown of Lorain.

Morrison, born Feb. 18, 1931, is widely recognized for fiction that examined American history and the Black experience across multiple eras and settings, including works linked to Ohio through place and theme. Her novel “Beloved,” set in Cincinnati, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1993, she became the first African American woman awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison died on Aug. 5, 2019.

Kickoff event at The Columbus Foundation on Feb. 18

The statewide celebration is scheduled to open on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, with a public program hosted at The Columbus Foundation. The event is planned as a conversation between writers Namwali Serpell and Hanif Abdurraqib and is structured to examine Morrison’s influence on contemporary literature and cultural life. Organizers have also indicated the program will be livestreamed, extending access beyond central Ohio.

Local programming expands beyond a single day

In addition to the statewide kickoff, Columbus-area organizations are planning Morrison-focused programs that mix readings, discussion formats, and community-based gatherings.

  • Bexley Public Library: A Toni Morrison celebration is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026, featuring readings by local authors and artists. The program is set for the library auditorium and is planned to include refreshments.

  • Community conversation format: A public event at Bexley Public Library is also listed as a structured discussion that connects Morrison’s work to themes of aging and creativity, using a “coffee shop conversation” model and timed to Morrison’s birthday week.

Why Feb. 18 carries special weight in Ohio

Ohio formally recognizes Feb. 18 as Toni Morrison Day, establishing an annual marker for public institutions and communities to highlight her legacy. Since the designation, the day has been used for civic and educational programming focused on reading, teaching, and public access to literature, reflecting ongoing debates nationwide over which books are included in school curricula and libraries.

The 2026–2027 initiative is designed as a statewide framework: a Columbus kickoff, regional signature events, and locally organized programs such as readings, discussions, school activities, screenings, and performances.

How Columbus residents can participate

For central Ohio readers, the schedule creates multiple entry points: attending the Columbus kickoff on Feb. 18, joining local library readings and discussions in the days leading up to Morrison’s birthday, and participating in additional statewide events as they are announced through 2027.
