A downtown book-buying event with a fundraising mission

The Columbus Metropolitan Library’s spring Big Book Sale is returning to downtown Columbus with a four-day schedule that blends public shopping hours with early access for members of the library’s Friends organization. The sale is organized by Friends of the Library, a nonprofit group that raises money to support library programs, services and future levy campaigns.

The event is designed to give withdrawn items from the library’s collection “a second chance” while generating revenue for library work. In addition to books, the sale is set to include media and collectibles such as DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and vinyl records, with starting prices published in advance.

Dates, location, and how entry works

The spring sale is scheduled at 96 S. Grant Ave. in downtown Columbus, listed for the Auditorium and “1A” spaces.

  • Thursday, March 26: 4–7 p.m. (members-only preview sale)
  • Friday, March 27: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (open to all)
  • Saturday, March 28: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (open to all)
  • Sunday, March 29: 1–4 p.m. (open to all bag sale)

Friends of the Library members receive early access during the preview period and are also eligible for a 10% discount on purchases during Big Book Sales. Sale transactions are capped at $400 per household or membership.

Pricing and the bag-sale model

General pricing published for the spring sale lists children’s books, comic books and vinyl records starting at $1; adult fiction and nonfiction starting at $2; and DVDs, CDs and audiobooks starting at $3.

The final day is structured as a “bag sale,” a common clearance model used by library fundraising sales. Shoppers are asked to bring a sturdy bag to fill for a flat $5. A Friends of the Library canvas tote is also listed as an option for $12 during the spring event.

What the sale represents in a larger downtown calendar

The spring Big Book Sale dates fall immediately before a separate, larger-scale downtown literary weekend later in the year: the Columbus Book Festival is scheduled for July 11–12, 2026, and includes a Friends of the Library Big Book Sale tent as part of its marketplace footprint. Friends of the Library has also listed another Big Book Sale for July 11–12 with a members-only preview on July 10.

Volunteering and community participation

Friends of the Library also recruits volunteers for Big Book Sales, with roles that can include sorting materials, stocking tables and supporting checkout lines. The organization indicates that volunteer access and limited perks may be available for those who sign up for shifts.
