City Marks Milestone in Sustainability with Landfill Partnership

Today, February 20, 2026, the City of Columbus joined representatives from The Landfill Group for a series of official activities at the Pinegrove MSW Landfill. The gathering serves to celebrate the ongoing construction of a new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility, a major infrastructure project aimed at advancing the city’s environmental sustainability goals. The event, which coincides with Arbor Day recognitions in Georgia, includes a tree-planting ceremony and guided tours of the facility site for city officials and project stakeholders.

The RNG facility represents a significant public-private partnership intended to modernize landfill management. Once fully operational, which is expected by the spring of 2026, the facility will process extracted methane—a byproduct of organic waste decomposition—into a renewable energy source. This gas will then be sold to outside users, effectively reducing the landfill's carbon footprint while generating a new stream of renewable energy for the region.

Infrastructure and Environmental Impact

According to the Columbus Department of Public Works, this project has been in development since 2025. The transition of methane from a waste product to a resource is a cornerstone of the city's long-term climate action plan. Key highlights of the project discussed today include:

  • The reduction of local greenhouse gas emissions through methane capture.
  • The creation of specialized infrastructure to support regional renewable energy needs.
  • A collaborative investment model between the consolidated government and private industry partners.

Public Works Director Drale Short noted that while today’s event remains closed to the general public due to active construction, an official public ribbon-cutting ceremony is being planned for later this year when commercial operations reach full capacity.

Council Action: Public Safety Bonuses Distributed Today

In addition to environmental developments, today marks the official execution of a city council measure regarding public safety compensation. Following a vote held during the January 27 session, the city is issuing one-time bonuses today, February 20, to eligible officers. The resolution, which was supported by Mayor Pro Tem Allen and the wider Council, provides these payments to officers who were on the payroll as of late January and have completed at least 24 months of service. Finance officials confirmed that the funding for these non-recurring bonuses was secured through a mid-year budget adjustment to recognize the continued service of the city's law enforcement personnel.
