Fatal Semi-Truck and Van Crash Shuts Down I-270 South Near U.S. 33 In Southeast Columbus

What happened
One person was killed in a crash on Interstate 270 South on Columbus’ Southeast Side involving a tractor-trailer and a van. The collision occurred on the southbound side of the outerbelt near the interchange with U.S. Route 33, in an area that serves as a major freight and commuter corridor linking Southeast Columbus with eastern and southern Franklin County.
Investigators determined the crash occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2025. A Chevrolet van was slowed or stopped on I-270 South when it was struck by a tractor-trailer. Following impact, the tractor-trailer overturned and came to rest off the roadway in a grassy drainage area.
Victim information and injury reports
The driver of the tractor-trailer was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath. Authorities did not publicly release the victim’s identity at the time, citing notification of next of kin as a prerequisite.
Police noted that early information circulating immediately after the crash contained inaccuracies, including an initial report suggesting multiple fatalities. Investigators later clarified that the confirmed death was the semi-truck driver.
Traffic impact and lane closures
The wreck led to an extended closure of I-270 South in the affected area, with traffic diverted to alternate routes. Ramps feeding I-270 South from Interstate 70 were closed during the response and investigation period.
The highway remained shut down for much of the day as crews worked through several phases of the response, including:
- medical and emergency operations at the scene
- crash reconstruction and evidence collection
- recovery and removal of the overturned tractor-trailer
- roadway cleanup and maintenance work following the investigation
I-270 South fully reopened at approximately 9:23 p.m., nearly 11 hours after the shutdown began.
What investigators are still working to determine
The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit continued reviewing the circumstances that led to the van being slowed or stopped in a travel lane and the events immediately preceding the collision. As is typical in fatal commercial-vehicle crashes, investigators may assess roadway conditions, vehicle positioning, driver actions, and other factors that can be documented through physical evidence and available traffic or vehicle data.
Police asked anyone with direct knowledge of the crash to contact investigators as the review continued.
The investigation remained ongoing following the reopening of the interstate.
