Icy Roads and Winter Storm Recovery

Commuters in Columbus should prepare for a challenging drive this Friday, January 30, 2026. Following the significant snowfall from Winter Storm Fern earlier this week, road crews continue to battle icy patches and narrowed lanes across the metro area. While major highways like I-71 and I-270 have been cleared of the bulk of the snow, the sub-zero temperatures overnight have led to widespread black ice, particularly on overpasses and exit ramps. Travelers are advised to allow for at least 20 extra minutes for their morning commute as traffic speeds remain significantly below the legal limit.

Major Construction and Downtown Ramp-Up Impacts

The multi-year I-70/I-71 Downtown Ramp-Up project remains a primary source of congestion. Phase 4R/6R is currently in full swing, with significant restrictions near the southern downtown corridor. Commuters who typically use the High Street bridge should note that it remains closed for total reconstruction following the reopening of the Front Street bridge. Additionally, motorists on the West Side will encounter orange barrels and narrowed lanes on I-70 between the Madison County line and Hilliard-Rome Road due to ongoing resurfacing projects. On the southeast side, lane restrictions on I-270 between I-70 and Alum Creek Drive continue to slow traffic, especially for those merging from the suburbs into the city center.

COTA Service Alerts and Safety Notices

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is operating on a regular weekday schedule today, but officials warn of potential delays across all fixed routes. Maintenance crews are still working to clear hundreds of bus stops that were buried by municipal plows. Riders are encouraged to use the Transit app to track buses in real-time, as arrival times may fluctuate due to surface street conditions. Note that as of earlier this week, Lines 22 and 24 have implemented route changes to better serve the Mobility Center at Rickenbacker (MCAR) and no longer terminate at the Marathon stop. COTA advises all passengers to stand well back from the curb at stops and wear brightly colored clothing to ensure visibility during the dark morning hours.

Evening Event Congestion and Heavy Traffic Areas

Heavy traffic is expected to build early this afternoon and persist through the evening hours due to several major events in the downtown and university areas. Commuters should be aware of the following peak-traffic generators:

  • Value City Arena: The Ohio State Buckeyes hockey team takes on the Michigan Wolverines at 6:30 PM, which will likely cause gridlock on Lane Avenue and Olentangy River Road.
  • Ohio Theatre: Performances of Les Miserables at 7:30 PM will increase pedestrian and vehicle volume near the Statehouse and along East State Street.
  • Covelli Center: Ohio State Wrestling hosts Wisconsin at 6:00 PM, impacting traffic around the Fred Taylor Drive corridor.

With the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium remaining closed through today due to extreme cold and snow accumulation, weekend-style congestion in the Powell area may be reduced, but local commuters should remain vigilant for slick secondary roads throughout Franklin County.
