City Council Assembly and Zoning Hearings

The Columbus City Council is scheduled to convene today, Monday, March 9, 2026, for its regular legislative session. The primary meeting is set to begin at 5:00 PM in the City Council Chambers, followed by a Zoning Committee hearing at 6:30 PM. Residents are encouraged to attend or view the proceedings as the council reviews over 70 agenda items, ranging from departmental appointments to financial ordinances.

Key highlights of today’s session include the formalization of ballot language for two significant charter amendments. These proposed amendments, focused on Community Crisis Response and Community Crisis Response Services, are slated for the special election to be held on May 5, 2026. The measures seek to refine how the city handles emergency calls and crisis intervention. Additionally, the council will consider an ordinance to celebrate local heritage and upcoming community observations, including the recognition of St. Patrick’s Day later this month.

Public Infrastructure: Water Utility Milestones

The Department of Public Utilities has issued updates regarding generational investments in the city's water infrastructure. Following years of environmental review and engineering, the city has officially moved forward with advertising construction for the Home Road Water Plant. This $1.6 billion project is described as one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the city's history, aimed at adding 48 million gallons of daily capacity to support regional growth through 2032.

In addition to this long-term project, localized water line improvements are scheduled to begin shortly. The Sawmill Place Boulevard Area project, which includes the replacement of aging mains and private lead service lines, is currently in the pre-construction phase. Residents in the Far Northwest and Northwest communities should anticipate a Notice to Proceed by April 2026, with work spanning approximately 550 days once initiated.

Public Safety and Health Advisories

The Ohio Attorney General’s office has issued a high-priority warning for Columbus residents regarding a sophisticated text messaging scam. Fraudulent messages are currently circulating that claim recipients owe outstanding parking or toll fines. These texts often include QR codes or links to sham websites that mimic official government domains. Officials advise that the court system does not use text messages to demand immediate payment or threaten arrest. Residents are urged to verify any legal notices independently through official department phone numbers.

On the health front, Columbus Public Health is observing National Nutrition Month throughout March. The department has also released its 2026 targets, which include an ambitious goal of 30,000 vaccinations for residents to prevent the spread of seasonal and preventable illnesses. This initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain a 99.5 percent compliance rate for local food facilities and enhance neighborhood social services.
