Official Notice: Columbus Growth Initiatives and Public Health Advisories

City Council Legislative Updates
Columbus City Council has announced several key legislative actions aimed at the city's long-term development and resident protection. Council President Shannon G. Hardin and Council President Pro Tem Rob Dorans are currently sponsoring Ordinance 0134-2026. This ordinance seeks to adopt the Columbus Growth Strategy as a formal amendment to the Columbus Citywide Planning Policies. Developed through the Zone In initiative, the strategy serves as a comprehensive land-use map designed to prioritize housing access, economic opportunity, and neighborhood vitality across the city.
In response to rising energy costs, Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche has introduced Ceremonial Resolution 0018X-2026. This resolution formally encourages the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to reject a proposed settlement by AEP Ohio. City officials warn that the settlement could lead to significant increases in monthly electricity bills for local residents and are advocating for measures to protect consumers from skyrocketing utility costs.
Additionally, Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla is advancing Ordinance 3133-2025, which funds the Quick Build Toolkit. This initiative is designed to accelerate the implementation of bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements. By utilizing low-cost, temporary materials, the city aims to rapidly deploy traffic infrastructure that protects residents in high-traffic neighborhoods.
Public Health and Safety Advisories
Columbus Public Health has issued a reminder that all department services will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday. This closure includes the Sexual Health and Wellness Center, immunization clinics, and the Alcohol and Drug Services division. Residents requiring urgent health information are encouraged to visit the city's online portal.
In alignment with the Ohio Department of Health, Columbus is observing February as American Heart Month. Local health officials are urging residents to focus on cardiovascular wellness through regular exercise and heart-healthy nutrition. Furthermore, a weather advisory is currently in effect regarding Winter Storm Fern. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during peak accumulation, and check on elderly neighbors or those living alone.
Public Works and Collection Schedules
The Department of Public Service reminds residents that the 2026 recycling and yard waste calendar is in full effect. For the current week ending February 14, any Friday collection delays due to local maintenance will be completed today, Saturday. Totes should be placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. to ensure pickup. The city also notes that bulk item collection must be scheduled in advance, with a limit of two items per household per month, each weighing less than 50 pounds.
