Public Health Advisory: Extreme Cold and Winter Storm Fern

The City of Columbus and the Ohio Department of Health have issued an emergency health advisory in response to Winter Storm Fern. While active snowfall has concluded, Central Ohio is now under an Extreme Cold Warning. On Monday, January 26, 2026, wind chills are expected to drop as low as 15 degrees below zero during daylight hours, plunging further to 25 degrees below zero overnight. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, as frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Please dress in multiple layers, ensure pets are kept indoors, and check on neighbors who may lack reliable heating.

Columbus City Council Meeting Schedule

Columbus City Council will proceed with its regular meeting today, Monday, January 26, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Due to hazardous road conditions and extreme temperatures, residents are encouraged to monitor official city channels for potential transitions to a virtual format. The evening's agenda includes over 100 matters, notably featuring appropriations for the RiverSouth Authority and infrastructure improvements for the Recreation and Parks Department. Following the general session, the Zoning Committee is scheduled to convene at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Impacted City Services and Facilities

Due to the inclement weather and staffing adjustments, the following service updates and closures are in effect for Monday, January 26:

  • Refuse Collection: Residential trash collection will continue as scheduled. However, recycling pickup is delayed by one day for all customers normally serviced on Mondays.
  • Libraries and Parks: All branches of the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Franklin Park Conservatory are closed for the day.
  • Government Offices: The Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) is closed to non-emergency personnel. Franklin County Municipal Court, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Board of Commissioners’ offices are also closed.
  • Healthcare Services: Columbus Public Health clinics may have modified hours. OhioHealth urgent care locations are currently closed, though telehealth services remain available.
