Sunday Traffic Overview

For Columbus residents heading out this Sunday, February 22, 2026, travel conditions are largely defined by long-term infrastructure overhauls. While Sunday traffic is typically lighter than the weekday rush, major permanent and semi-permanent closures related to the "Downtown Ramp Up" project and the newly launched Far East Freeway corridor work continue to impact travel patterns across the city.

Major Construction and Roadworks

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) remains heavily engaged in the I-70/I-71 split reconstruction, a multi-year project aimed at safety and congestion relief. The following impacts are currently in effect for Sunday commuters:

  • Downtown Ramp Closures: The ramp from I-70 westbound to I-71 southbound remains closed for construction. Additionally, the 3rd Street ramp to I-70 westbound and the SR 315 southbound ramp to I-70 eastbound are offline. Drivers should utilize the I-670 loop as the primary detour for east-west cross-town travel.
  • Trabue Road Bridge: On the city's west side, Trabue Road is reduced to two lanes (one in each direction) for the bridge rehabilitation project over the Scioto River. This restriction is expected to last through late 2026, so expect minor delays when traveling between Upper Arlington and the Hilliard area.
  • Far East Freeway Project: Early-stage work has begun on the I-70/I-270 interchange near Brice Road. While full lane closures are rare on Sundays, orange barrels are present, and speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph through the work zone.

Public Transit and COTA Alerts

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) has issued several alerts for Sunday riders that may impact weekend schedules and stop locations:

  • Easton Transit Center: Due to ongoing pantograph construction, several bays at the Easton Transit Center are inaccessible today. Impacted lines include 7, 9, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 34, 35, 44, and 45. Riders should look for temporary boarding signage located along Transit Drive.
  • Riverside Hospital Reroutes: Line 1 continues to be rerouted near Riverside Hospital due to adjacent construction. The northbound layover has been moved to a temporary stop on OhioHealth Parkway.
  • Tremont Road: Line 75 is currently experiencing stop closures and minor reroutes along Tremont Road between Wilshire Drive and Northam Road. Temporary stops are available for northbound service.

Commuter Advice

With several high-profile ramps closed in the downtown core, Sunday travelers are encouraged to use navigation apps to find the most efficient bypass. COTA riders should check the Transit app for real-time bus locations, as the Easton construction may cause slight timing offsets for connecting routes.
