Public Notice: Columbus Forward Housing and Recycling Updates

City Council Approves New Housing and Sustainability Measures
Following recent sessions, Columbus City Council has officially moved forward with several key phases of the 'Columbus Forward' initiative. These official actions are aimed at addressing the city’s housing shortage and improving environmental sustainability across municipal operations. Residents should take note of the following updates and public service announcements active as of Thursday, February 12, 2026.
The 'Yes In God’s Backyard' Housing Initiative
City Council has passed legislation to expedite the development of affordable housing on underutilized land owned by faith-based organizations, educational institutions, and non-profit groups. Known as the 'Yes In God’s Backyard' plan, this initiative allows for the construction of housing units on vacant parcels or unused parking lots. To qualify for expedited permitting and approvals, participating organizations must be part of the city’s community reinvestment program, which mandates specific requirements for affordable housing units.
Expanded Recycling Services
As part of the first phase of the Columbus Forward initiative, the city has authorized the expansion of recycling services to all municipal facilities. This measure is intended to streamline waste management and reduce the city’s environmental footprint. Public offices and community centers will see updated recycling infrastructure installed throughout the coming months.
