Valentine’s Day Traffic Outlook

As Columbus celebrates Valentine’s Day this Saturday, February 14, 2026, motorists should prepare for a significant increase in local traffic, particularly during the evening hours. While the morning commute is expected to remain light, typical of a Saturday, congestion will likely peak between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. as residents head to dinner reservations and special events across the city.

Major Construction and Permanent Closures

The ongoing I-70/I-71 Downtown Ramp Up project remains the most critical factor for those navigating the city center. Drivers are reminded of several permanent changes that took effect late last year:

  • I-70 Westbound: The 3rd Street ramp to I-70 West is permanently closed. Commuters should use the detour via 3rd Street to Mound Street to access the highway.
  • I-70 Eastbound: access to Livingston Avenue is no longer available via the former ramp. Motorists should exit at Fulton Street and follow the signage to 3rd Street to reach the Livingston Avenue area.
  • High Street: The bridge over I-70 continues to be restricted to one lane in each direction due to reconstruction. This bottleneck is a frequent site of delays during high-traffic events.

Event-Specific Congestion

Several high-profile events are scheduled for tonight, which may lead to localized slowdowns:

  • Italian Village: The Traffic Light Valentine's Party at Thirsty's Pub is expected to draw large crowds starting at 9:00 p.m., affecting parking and flow on North 4th Street.
  • East Columbus: The 35th Annual Valentine's Day Cabaret on Chatterton Road will likely increase volume near the Abe’s Banquet Hall area late into the night.
  • Downtown: Museums and restaurants near Broad and High Street will see steady pedestrian and vehicle traffic throughout the evening.

COTA and Public Transit Updates

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is operating on a standard Saturday schedule. Riders are encouraged to utilize the new "Tap to Pay" system, which now supports all major credit cards and mobile wallets for a more seamless boarding experience. While most lines are running as planned, passengers on Line 7 and Line 75 should check for minor local reroutes currently in effect near Cassady Avenue and Tremont Road.

Heads Up for Tomorrow

While tonight’s travel is manageable, prepare for overnight closures beginning Sunday, February 15. ODOT has announced that the I-71 northbound ramp to I-70 westbound and sections of SR 315 southbound under I-70 will undergo nightly closures starting at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow for bridge work.
